Irwindale, Calif. - - A good crowd of fans turned out for the Speedway's special salute to the country's Armed Forces. As part of the moving opening ceremonies, country and western recording star Josh Gracin sang the national anthem with members of the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle group circling the track. Every fan in the stands got an American flag and all military personnel, (which included the "Voice of Irwindale Speedway", announcer Bruce Flanders) active and retired, were given a stand ovation by the crowd.
Darren Amidon from Alpine won the Legends Cars event in a spirited 35-lap contest on the Speedway's inner third mile oval. There was more than a little "heated competition" in the Superior Automotive Engineering Super Stocks as tempers flared and helmets flew in a contest that saw some on (and off-track) racing "action" with Long Beach's Zack Green getting to the checkered flag first and some drivers being sent home by the officials.
All time winningest Irwindale driver (63 main event wins with this one) Rip Michels put on a driving clinic in the Super Late Models, the San Fernando driver coming from fourth place to take the win by a scant 0.435 second margin over Corona's hard-charging Jason Patison.
Ryan Partridge won the Progressive Painting Race Trucks on the track, the Rancho Cucamonga driver taking the lead from Duarte's Dennis Arena on lap three of the 40 lap race. In post-race tech inspection, Partridge's number 48 machine was disqualified for non-complying engine components and Race Liberate was declared the winner.
In the evening-ending Pick Your Part Skid Plate Cars race, and almost as though DQ fever was "catching", the on track third place finisher's car (Fred Adams, #12) was DQed for having a "locked" differential (really about the only verboten tech item in the otherwise mostly tongue-in-cheek division).
Another spectacular Garden City Fireworks show closed the evening of speed and sent all the fans home with a wow, a smile and their own private thoughts about what Memorial Day means to them.
