NASCAR Whelen All-American Series

Irwindale Speedway

Irwindale, California

June 22, 2013

Irwindale, Calif. - - Steve Rogers kicked off the night's festivities with a popular win in the Mini Stocks, when the veteran driver got a bit emotional in the winner's circle, the crowd approved with a great round of applause. The Riverside driver and the other 12 Mini Stock pilots really put on a great third-mile show that set the tone for a night of great NASCAR Home Track racing competition and fan thrills.

Four wide half of the time, three-wide every lap, the Progressive Painting Race Trucks showed why this division always puts on what everyone agrees is one of the best races of the night. Lawndale's Ken Michaelian led the first section of the race but gave way to the flying 48 truck of Rancho Cucamonga's Ryan Partridge. The race was green for the first 34 laps when Andrew Porter's (Oak Hills) lurid spin in the middle of turn four brought out the yellow. With six laps to go and a double-wide start Partridge got the lead back with Lucas McNeil (Saugus) close behind ... until a gnarly six car tie up on slowed the action and gave the truck show a three-lap (hold your breath) finish. In the end Partridge held them all off for the win with Michaelian notching a second and Monrovian Todd Cameron in third.

The 50 lap Super Late Model race went right for the throat with San Fernando's Rip Michels grabbing the lead only to see Corona's Jason Patison blast by him with a low side pass in turn four that was not only daring but did a nice job of edging the grass on the inside of the track for the maintenance crew! Michels regained the lead decided to leg it a little bit with Patison right behind and Highland's Toni McCray running in third. Early in the 50 lap feature Michels was turning laps in the low 18.3 (98 miles per hour) range with Patison only a click off of that. In the all time Irwindale race winner (that was number 64) Michels drove a canny, all green flag, race once again exhibiting his mastery of the Irwindale oval.

Saving the wackiest for last, the Pick Your Part Skid Plate Cars put on a fifteen (or thereabouts, no one is ever quite clear on that) lap show that really sparkled ... Jim Smith from Orange won wild run that featured a nice, round thirty-car field that was sent "backwards" (turn right and stand on the gas) around the outside of the third mile by race director Mike Atkinson. The Skid Plate Cars play it (mostly) for fun, and the fans agree with that premise. No one sat very much for this one, and everyone in the stands seemed to be having at least as much fun at the drivers!

Wait a minute, did we say "last" ... No, that would be the Pick Your Part Demolition Derby for the night's closing act. An unusually small turn-out (what? full moon? ... big rugby game on TV?) of cars took to the Irwindale center ring on Saturday night. Only five drivers signed up to smash each other to smithereens, but what a smashing they did! There was chaos everywhere, tire smoke, steam, fire and scrunched sheet metal galore! When the smoke cleared and all the debris stopped falling out of the sky, Torrance's Keith Johns emerged from the last vehicle standing to accept the trophy and the accolades of the crowd.
