Celebrate Independence Day

with Spectacular Fireworks!

Irwindale, Calif. - - Once again Irwindale Speedway will stage an exciting night of NASCAR Home Track Racing capped off with the track's always terrific annual 4th of July Fireworks Finale.

... A tradition since the track opened in March of 1999; the Independence Day fireworks show that crowns the night's NASCAR activities is considered by many one of the best shows of its kind in southern California.

Of course plenty of on-track "sparks" are also set to fly on Saturday, July 6 in three of the most popular racing divisions at the track, the Lucas Oil Late Models, the Progressive Painting Race Trucks, and the Pick Your Part Skid Plate Cars.

Two points after three races ... that's all that separates #90 Toni McCray from Highland, California from Rancho Cucamonga's #48 Ryan Partridge. She's won two and come in third in the first three (of 9 total for 2013) Lucas Oil Late Model events, and Partridge has the other win (along with a second and a fourth place finish). Do the math (50 for first, 2 less for each succeeding place) and you come up with 146 (her) and 142 (him) at precisely one-third of the way through the competition year.

And ... while the top two keep it very close, the rest of the racers in this NASCAR Home Track championship division are not all that far behind.

Covina's Mike Johnson is third in the chase with 126 points and an attitude that makes him a serious threat every time his number 17 car rolls onto the racetrack. Behind him are: Chris Johnson (Claremont), William Helgesen (Riverside), Jeff Williams (Newbury Park), Andrew Porter (La Verne), and young Juan Garcia from nearby Bogota, Columbia. Their point totals in order are: 120, 114, 110, 106, and 94. With a full 50 points up for the win, and a tough field of competitors things can change fast, very fast, in the exceedingly competitive Lucas Oil Late Models.

And, then we have the Progressive Painting Race Trucks (let's shorten that to PPRT for a paragraph or two).  This is a division that's flat out guaranteed* to put on some of the closest, and most electrifying racing anyone ever sees on the blended-banking half-mile oval that's often referred to as "LA's Half-Mile Super Speedway"

COME ON DOWN!   PPRT Points leader Darren Cheek has the distinction of his racing team having been the top "prize" on a recent edition of "The Price is Right" TV gameshow. Actually, it was for the opportunity to join Darren's team in the pits and then watch Cheek's race from one of the track's cool ultraluxury Skybox suites with 29 close friends and case of Rocket Fizz soda pop.

Cheek, a Redlands resident, has yet to win a race at Irwindale this year, but his two second places and a fourth see him heading the points posse with 140 to Ken Michaelian's 128 and Ken Brown's 126. (just for the record: Ken1 is from Lawndale and Ken2 comes from Cherry Valley). Two "locals" round out the trucking top five with Duarte's Dennis Arena and Monrovia's Todd Cameron not all that far behind at 112 and 110 points respectively.

At little after 9pm on Saturday night the track lights will dim, the crowd will start to buzz with anticipation that eagerly-awaited big, gigantor sparkly show is about to start:

RIGHT! ... IT'S THE PICK YOUR PART SKID PLATE CARS... There should be about 30 or 40 of these crowd favorites racing at Irwindale on Saturday night, every last one of them trying to occupy the very same part of the track's third-mile at the very same moment of time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it goes very, very sideways ... One guess on what's expected on Saturday night.

This time the Skid kids will have something really special added for their driving and sliding pleasure: A real, honest, Trophy Dash. The eight fastest Skidders will go for four furious laps to see who's the fastest of the fast. Sometimes driving 'round and 'round with a steel plate welded to the bottom of each of your rear wheels is really fun ... And other times it's even better than that!

So ... Let's recap shall we: Great racing, great fun, and a great fireworks show all for the same low $15 adult admission price. By the way, discount tickets for Saturday night's show are available on the track's website right now:
