Irwindale, Calif. - - A warm night and a full house of excited fans greeted the Progressive Painting Race Trucks on Irwindale's traditional night for celebrating America's birthday...
Top qualifier Connor Cantrell from Valencia won the race handily (if you can call 1.359 seconds ahead after fully 50 laps "handily") over Rancho Cucamonga's Ryan Partridge who led the opening laps but first was slowed by a car that he was lapping and then by a right front tire that made a rather scary-looking smoke cloud every time that he came through turn four. Lucas McNeil (Saugus), Christian McGhee (LaVerne), and points leader Darren Cheek (Redlands) rounded out the top 5 in the popular pickup truck 50-lap feature.
Eighteen blazing Lucas Oil Late Models lit off under booming "Drivers start your engine!" command from the night's Grand Marshal Kent McCord and then proceeded to put on a great show with a bit of a jump start and a five car pack so tight that, if they made blankets that were really tough (and maybe out of Nomex), you could cover them.
Eventually race leader Ryan Partridge decided that he was not interested in finishing second twice in one night and bolted ahead for a decisive win in the track's national championship division. Andrew Porter (LaVerne), Cole Custer (North Carolina), and Mike Johnson (Covina) stayed glued together to put on a photo finish for the fans, coming to the line almost side by side by side, all three within a half second on the clock!
Pick Your Part Skid Plate Cars again put on a show that, well, could only be described as UN-controlled chaos. For the night's racing finale thirty-three of the nutball machines with metal plates where their rear tires should be all took to the track's inner third mile and ... when the sparks finally died down, Temple City's own Michael Digregorio was declared the winner and only the top seven runners were on the lead lap with him.
The Partridge family was again well represented with Ryan's brother, Andy coming in second in the Skidders feature. The silver-haired "Godfather" of the Skid Plate bunch, Robert Rice (Hawthorne), got a well-deserved third place in the melee with Ryan Partridge (remember him?) completing a driving trifecta for the night finishing a respectable ninth place, one lap down on the leaders.
The night was capped off with the biggest (and many said best) fireworks show ever at the place that's been known over the years for it's stunning aerial presentations. The near-capacity crowd left happy and well-entertained both on the track and in the air.
