Irwindale, Calif. - - Veteran driver Greg Voigt qualified first in the 23-car field and went on to win the night's featured 51 Fifty Energy Drink 100 presented by Ameripride Services for the Spears Southwest Tour Cars. He was cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of 4,500+ which included his mom, who had never witnessed any of the driver's many races.

The Goleta resident was Irwindale's 2000 Super Late Model division champion, but had not raced at the Speedway since 2001. In his post-race interview Voigt indicated that his mother is gravely ill with cancer and had really wanted to see him race on Saturday night. She was well-rewarded with his strong performance. Derek Thorn (Bakersfield) finished a close second, only 3-tenths of a second behind Voigt (after 100 laps!) with Irwindale regular Toni McCray (Highland) fighting back from a first lap spin (that had put her back in last place on lap 2) for a very well-received third spot on the victory podium.

Dylan Cappello had a good night on his first trip to Irwindale Speedway. The young driver set a new track record for the Lucas Oil Modifieds and then went on to win the LoanMart Super Fast 75 with a pass on lap 60 that saw the Peoria, Arizona driver triumph by nearly a full second over a hard-charging Chris Gerchman from Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Irwindale Super Late Model regular Jason Patison from Corona took third in the event that's set to be aired on MAVTV later in the season. The division set another record: the most Modifieds ever to race at Irwindale, with 35 of the quick and cagey machines all taking to the half-mile on Saturday. This win saw Cappello take over the points lead with three races left to go in the 2014 championship challenge. Earlier in the evening Larry Gerchman won the 6-lap BILSTEIN / Super Gen Trophy Dash for the Lucas-backed tour and Daniel Williams from Glendale won the Modified's 25-lap B-Main.

Ryan Vargas from La Mirada won both the Friday and Saturday night 20-lap editions of the Universal Studios Hollywood Bandoleros, keeping his perfect record of 2014 first place finishes ... in a word: perfect.

Fourteen year-old rookie driver Blaine Perkins from Bakersfield, made it two in a row as well (but this time a couple of weeks apart) in the 35-lap feature for the stock car spec series at Irwindale winning the Spears SRL S2 Tour event, again besting veteran driver Kenny Smith from Oak Hills. Johnny Butler from Arcadia ran a good race finishing only one second back of Smith for third.

In the INEX Legend Cars, points leader Brent Scheidemantle from Alta Loma got the win with Ricky Schlick of Claremont, and Tony Mangini from Benicia rounding out the top three on in the 35-lap main for the speedy third-mile division.

NEXT EVENT: And, for Saturday Night, August 30 ... Remain Calm but do hang on to something solid ... as Irwindale Speedway explodes NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION #2, when things WILL go bump in the night.

Of course a full night of mirthful motoring mischief and mayhem will ensue when the first event rolls off at 7:00PM; but fans are advised to get to the Speedway early and in time for the (FREE) On-Track Autograph Session at 5:45PM. There they'll be able to meet all of the participants and witness their wild, wacky and wonderful "racin'creations" many of which, shortly thereafter and throughout the evening, will be reduced to smoldering wrecks and/or virtually undistinguishable piles of twisted metal and fiberglass.

On the official NofD#2 card for Labor Day weekend Saturday are: Auto Soccer, an Enduro Race on the "Roval", the Seidner's Collision Centers Skid Plate Cars, a Compact Car Demolition Derby, Trailer Races, and a NASCAR all-comers Open Comp race on the third mile.

Discount tickets for this excellent evening of eccentric ebullience are instantly available 24/7 (up until midnight Friday, August 29) on-line at:
