Irwindale Speedway Teams with ALS Society For Fan Ice-Bucket Challenge: This Sat. Aug 30 FLASH: Track Mascot Gets Doused on Facebook ... Fans Can Take Challenge Right on the Race Track!

Irwindale, Calif. - - In what's right on track to be one of the biggest-ever group ALS Ice Bucket Challenge events in southern California, "LugNut Junior", Irwindale Speedway's racing mascot, first took his own drenching right on the NASCAR track's start/finish line and then issued a challenge to all Irwindale fans to take a chilling ice-water wetting themselves for a good cause this Saturday night.

As thousands have already viewed on the track's Facebook page, the costumed character got very wet for a very good cause when a huge bucket of ice water was poured on him from the starter's stand.

The big-eyed, bolt-headed, caped character took the wet, cold bath in stride and then turned to the camera and issued a direct challenge to all Irwindale Speedway fans for them to follow his lead this Saturday night.

Here's how it will work: Fans in attendance at this Saturday night's special "Pick Your Part Night of Destruction 2"* will be able to sign up at the ALS Society's check-in booth right at the main gate of the spectator area. A suggested minimum $5.00 donation will get them a special wrist band that will be their personal "ticket" to an ice-cold drenching at about 8pm right on the racetrack, right in the middle of all that night's racing, and right in front of thousands of fans in the stands.

The expectation is that this unique ALS Ice Bucket (the track's water truck will stand in as the "bucket" in this case) Challenge at the Speedway will set a record for the number of participants all getting soaking wet for a good cause. "Just about everyone on our staff has taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in the past few weeks," said Jim Cohan, the Speedway's President/CEO. "So we decided that we'd open the challenge up to all of our great guests ... to come out to Irwindale and get wet for this important  cause in front of a grandstand full of cheering NASCAR fans on Saturday night."

The track's official partner, the very friendly Courtyard by Marriott on Huntington Drive at the 210 freeway in Monrovia, will be providing fluffy hotel towels for all of the participants to dry off with after the Challenge.

*which will feature wild Trailer Races, Skid Plate Cars, Auto Soccer, a Compact Car Demolition Derby, and a couple of NASCAR stock car races just for good measure.

Discount tickets for this Saturday night's event are on sale right now on the Speedway's website (

The track is located at 500 Speedway Drive in Irwindale (on the 605 freeway between the 10 and the 210). Gates will open at 4pm with the track's famous FREE (Bring the Kids!) On-Track Autograph Session beginning at 5:45pm, with racing starting at 7pm sharp. Fans accepting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge will be escorted to the track's start/finish stripe by none other than LugNut Junior at about 8pm right after the second NASCAR race of the night.

The ALS Society is leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.
