Late Results: Night of Destruction 2 Presented by Pick Your Part!
Irwindale,Calif. Billed as second of three "2014 season Nights of Destruction" at Irwindale Speedway...a sold-out Labor day weekend crowd poured into the Irwindale grandstands first to see 30 laps of exciting 2014 championship points racing with the NASCAR Super Stocks, some spirited third-mile competition with the "run-whatcha-brung" Open Comp Cars, as well as a Two Driver Mini-Enduro that traversed a convoluted "roval" (shorthand for "road course oval") for 30 wild laps. After that, the advertised "Destruction" part of the night started in earnest.
In the NASCAR Super Stock points race, Henry Miles of Palmdale, thrilled the huge crowd with a last lap pass of race leader Craig Rayburn (Simi) to win his first-ever SS race at Irwindale by a scant two-tenths (.202) of a second. Covina's Greg Crutcher got third, with points leader Zack Green (Long Beach) in fourth and Apple Valley's Gary Frankovich rounding out the top five. Green still leads the division's 2014 points chase, but with this popular win, Miles moves up to second in points only 16 back of Green (332-316), with La Verne's Gary Reed now third in points with three races to go at 310.
Jerry Toporek from Venice won the Open Comp race while the two man team of Jim and Gary Smith prevailed in a "rather messy, but fun" team driving Enduro for Compact Cars. (A number of which limped off the field of battle even a bit more "compacted cars" than they had started the race 30 raucous laps before.)
After the first three events of the evening, some 250 enthusiastic Irwindale fans took part "en masse" in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The track's mascot, LugNut Junior, had challenged Irwindale fans to come to the race on Saturday, make a contribution to the ALS Association, and then follow him right out onto the track to get doused by the track's water truck for a good cause. To the cheers of a full house, the huge group of eager fans stood in line along the front straight and got (very) soaked. Happily enough, the track's host hotel, Courtyard by Marriott in Monrovia supplied a hopper full of clean dry towels for the participants to dry themselves after the deluge. Needless to say, the cheers from the stands were strong, long, and loud for some very thoughtful fans. Participants taking the ALS challenge donated some $1800.00 for the opportunity to get soaked in front of the near sell-out crowd on Saturday night, and, as promised, Irwindale Event Center President/CEO Jim Cohan matched that amount, writing the organization a check for just over $3700.00.
Following the ALS Challenge ... the promised "Night of Destruction" got under way with alacrity ... In the mad Auto Soccer game, Team Pick Your Part scored a lopsided 6-2 victory over Team Low Budget TV with team captain Robert Rice (Hawthorne) scoring a (er ... what's a hat trick and two additional goals called?). Whatever it's called, Rice nudged the nearly 4-foot tall, 450-pound plate steel "soccer ball" into the TLB goal 5 times himself for what was believed to be a new Auto Soccer scoring world record.
Fully twenty-nine (slightly-crazed) Seidner's Collision Centers Skid Plate Cars took to Irwindale inner third mile oval on Saturday night. When the sparks had finally died down 20 action-packed laps later, the pride of Yorba Linda, Sean Brennen had won the day by a "wide" 6.867-second margin. Remarkably enough, the top five finishers all completed all 20 laps of the spinning, swirling Skid Plate melee, which always looks a little like a mad-motorized-metal ballet without the benefit of any nice music or pointy-toed shoes.
Adam Ditto from nearby Monrovia, won the Compact Car Demolition Derby and Jeffry Best was voted on (by crowd applause) as the victor over Robert Rice in a smash-em-up derby ... er ... 20-lap Trailer Race, which left shards of boats, house trailers, tow vehicles, and other miscellaneous parts and pieces of "stuff" all over the Irwindale third-mile and that had the giant crowd mostly chortling while trying to laugh and cheer at the same time.
