LATE RESULTS: FIRST RESPONDERS NIGHT 2014 Presented by D and D Golf Cars 9-13-14

 Irwindale, Calif. - -

The tight chase for the Irwindale championship in the Lucas Oil Late Models got a whole bunch tighter on Saturday night when the challenger (Toni McCray from Highland) had a bad night and the points leader (Ryan Partridge from Rancho Cucamonga) had a good one.  In race one of the twin Lucas 30-lappers, McCray had her gear shift lever break off in her hand during an early restart, after a hasty trip to the pits, she came back some laps down to salvage a smoky twelfth place for 28 points.  Unfortunately, McCray's crew could not get her machine ready to answer the bell for the second race of the night.
Partridge won the first race and got a good third for 96 points on the night and a 40-point lead (716 to 676) over McCray.

The Cansdales (father and son) celebrate the win.          Marv Keller

In race two, the Lucas Oil Late Models division saw its youngest- ever winner in fifteen year old Ryan Cansdale (Laguna Beach) who had finished a strong second in the first race of the night.  Trevor Huddleston made a great run for a close-behind second place in race two, and La Verne's Andrew Porter took a fourth and a third in the twin races.  The great news for fans is that there are three races (and 200 points!) still ahead and a number of drivers who could still take top honors in Irwindale's national championship points division.

Alta Loma's Brent Scheidemantle did it again in the INEX Legend Cars winning a wild race and extending his points lead in the division by 42 markers.  Brendan Weaver from Trabuco Canyon got a close second place just one second back, with Claremont's Ricky Schlick close on Weaver's rear bumper for a solid third.

The Irwindale Super Stocks ran a 30-lap yellow-flag-free race that had a whole bunch of early lead changes with Palmdale's Henry Miles grabbing the lead mid-race and winning his second race in a row.  He was followed to the checker by Zack Green (Long Beach) and Greg Crutcher (Covina).  Miles' win pulled him to within fourteen points of series leader Green (380-366) with two races (and 150 points) yet to go in the 2014 season.

Zack Green had a better night (by one place) in the Pick Your Part South West Tour Trucks race winning that touring show by a second and a half over Ronnie Davis from Whittier.  Ventura's Ed Cutler finished third in the 35-lap event that took 12 minutes, 21 point 586 seconds to complete.

The "big boomers", officially named the Pick Your Part Super Late Models, lived up to their title billing with Jason Patison (Corona) notching his third straight victory in the heavy duty division and putting him into a tie with Toni McCray with only one (double points October 18, do not miss) race to go on the clock.  Patison was hounded by a determined Linny White (Highland) and an equally aggressive Juan Garcia from Bogota, Colombia in second and third spots respectively.  Now, with a single race left the top three in points could hardly be closer: McCray 274, Patison 274, and White 272. There'll be 100 points on the line the next time the Super Lates head to the starting line at Irwindale and absolutely no need to over-hype this one.

The Seidner's Collision Centers Skid Plate Cars events are pretty much Irwindale's version of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" ... a million and a half laughs, and points that really don't count (but who's counting anyway?).  They of the sparking rear skidplates put on another crowd-pleasing punch-up that saw the steel-shoed small sedans slipping and sliding around a very bent oval ("roval") course that added an extra element of sideways to the already sort of slickkery situation.  Sean Brennan (Yorba Linda) won the event with Austin Lee of Rancho Cucamonga and Michael DeGregorio from Temple City, sliding along right behind in the silver and bronze finishing positions.
